Why Choose Maya Earth Coffee

Perfect Conditions

Maya Earth Coffee is distinct and exceptional for various reasons:

Our Guatemalan coffees are cultivated between 4,200 and 6,500 above sea level; cool mountain temperatures provide a slower growth cycle for the coffee tree which prolongs bean development and the longer maturation process instills the coffee bean with more complex sugars, yielding deeper, more interesting flavors.

Maya Earth Coffees are grown in multiple microclimates within Guatemalan highlands that are packed with biodiversity. Major geographic influences are large crater lakes, the plains of southern Mexico, and high mountain ranges that help keep temperatures in the mountains warm enough to prevent frost.

Our Guatemalan coffees receive Ideal rainfall which are plentiful and varied with an almost perfect rainfall pattern for growing coffee: well defined rainy and dry seasons, and at least one hard, dependable rain during the dry season, essential to induce the flowering that turns into coffee berries some eight months later.

Maya Earth Coffees are grown in mineral rich soils formed primarily from volcanic deposits and an underground limestone shelf, both rich in minerals. Active volcanoes occasionally produce light ash deposits, further enhancing the soil.  Shade coffee also provide nourishment from organic matter when they drop their leaves.

Maya Earth Coffees have access to an abundant water supply via many rivers and streams. The water allows farmers to process their coffee within the community via wet-mills. This is crucial to the production of fine Guatemalan coffee, since it means that all coffee gets processed within hours of picking.

Maya Earth Coffees are grown under a canopy of shade that is friendly to the environment. The coffee beans mature more slowly in the shade, thus natural sugars increase and enhance the flavor of the coffee.

Specialty Guatemalan Coffee

According to the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), coffee which scores 80 points or above on a 100-point scale is graded “specialty.”[1] Specialty coffees are grown in special and ideal climates, and are distinctive because of their full cup taste and little to no defects.  The unique flavors and tastes are a result of the special characteristics and composition of the soils in which they are produced. Maya Earth Coffee is 100% specialty coffee based on the fact that our coffee score from 86 to 90 points, which is classified by SCAA as “excellent” coffee.

Indigenous Grown Guatemalan Coffee

Guatemala is comprised of 22 provinces and its territory is about the size of the state of Louisiana. There are 23 ethnic groups and the same number of languages spoken. Since the invasion of Europeans over 500 years ago, the indigenous Maya of Guatemala faced many challenges including the  loss of their traditional lands, killer earthquakes, corrupt governments, discrimination and even genocide. The Maya people are humble and hard working; they are scientists, astronomers, artisans, architects, time-keepers, agronomists and resilient.  Maya Earth Coffee was founded to support Mayan farmers in indigenous communities in Guatemala. Our work with the Mayan people in the highlands of Guatemala during the 1980s and ‘90s inspired me to purchase Mayan-grown coffee exclusively from community-based organizations. Since 2009, Maya Earth Coffee has imported approximately 745,339 pounds of Mayan-grown green coffee beans!
